ST. JOHNSBURY — Vermont State Police arrested five people Friday for allegedly helping a man who shot and seriously wounded a St. Johnsbury police captain last month.

Patrice Mason, 36, of St. Johnsbury, was jailed for lack of $10,000 bail on charges of aiding in the commission of a felony and negligent storage of firearms resulting in serious bodily injury.

Four others face accessory charges in connection with the December 13 shooting of Capt. Jason Gray. Jonathan Russell, 45, remains jailed on $1,000 bail, while Tisa Russell, 45, William Drew, 44, and Amber Labrecque, 35, were released on citations.

The arrests stem from the shooting of Gray during a domestic violence call at Scott Mason’s Portland Street apartment. After shooting Gray, Mason evaded capture for nearly 36 hours before police found him in an adjacent building.

Gray, a 25-year veteran of the department, fired his service weapon during the encounter. He was airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center with serious injuries.

Four suspects are scheduled for arraignment Tuesday, while Labrecque will appear February 10. Police said additional arrests are expected.

Scott Mason faces charges of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
