MANCHESTER — A local man was arrested early Saturday morning on charges of burglary, unlawful trespass, DUI refusal, and unlawful mischief after allegedly breaking into the Rest Motel.

Manchester Police Department received a call about suspicious activity at the motel located at 2066 Depot Street at about 1:18 a.m. The caller reported an unattended running vehicle with its door open in the parking lot and a subsequent break-in into his apartment.

The suspect, identified as Jerry E. Ellis, Jr., was said to have entered the motel through the basement and forcibly entered the apartment, leaving it in disarray.

The caller reported Ellis leaving the scene in his vehicle heading eastbound on Depot Street.

Officers from Manchester and Winhall Police Departments responded, locating Ellis and his vehicle roughly half a mile from the motel.

Ellis showed signs of impairment but refused sobriety tests and was detained on suspicion of DUI.

During processing at the police department, Ellis caused further damage to property and displayed erratic behavior.

He was lodged at the Marble Valley Correctional Facility on a $5,000 bail and is due in Bennington County Superior Court on May 28 at 12:30 p.m.
