STANDISH — A local man has been charged with animal cruelty after authorities found an abandoned kitten in a high school parking lot, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.

Shane T. Wescott, 37, of Standish, was identified and charged following an investigation into the incident that occurred on May 18 in the parking lot of Bonney Eagle High School.

The sheriff’s office, with help from the public, located Wescott and charged him with a Class “D” misdemeanor for animal cruelty.

Wescott is scheduled to appear in Bridgton District Court on July 16.

Officials expressed gratitude to community members who provided information leading to the identification and charging of Wescott.

The Sheriff’s Office also issued a reminder that abandoning animals is not a solution, urging those unable to care for pets to contact local animal control, state humane agents, shelters, or emergency services for assistance.
