Wareham officer injured after cruiser struck during traffic stop

WAREHAM — A Wareham police officer was hospitalized after their cruiser was hit from behind during a traffic stop on Cranberry Highway, authorities said Saturday night.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. Friday when the officer, conducting a motor vehicle stop near 3132 Cranberry Highway, was rear-ended by another vehicle.

The cruiser, with its emergency lights on, sustained significant damage while the officer was still inside.

A second Wareham officer on the scene witnessed the crash, and along with Wareham EMS and Onset Fire Department, provided medical assistance to both the injured officer and the driver of the other vehicle.

Authorities identified the driver as Cameron McPhee, 24, of Plymouth.

McPhee and the officer were transported to Tobey Hospital by Wareham EMS.

McPhee faces charges including Operating Under the Influence (OUI) of alcohol, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Move Over for an Emergency Vehicle, and Possession of an Open Container of Alcohol.

He is scheduled to be arraigned at Wareham District Court on Monday, May 20.
