BARTON — A 20-year-old Newport Center man was arrested last month after allegedly eluding police while driving recklessly on US Route 5.

Vermont State Troopers said they observed a white Chevrolet Sonic overtaking another vehicle at a high rate of speed on April 28.

When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver, later identified as Trevor Thompson, reportedly continued to drive erratically, crossing the center line to pass other vehicles.

Authorities decided not to pursue the Sonic for safety reasons.

The vehicle was later spotted again on US Route 5, where it once more failed to stop for law enforcement.

Following an investigation, Thompson was apprehended and charged with eluding a police officer while operating in a grossly negligent manner and grossly negligent operation.

He was transported to the Vermont State Police Derby Barracks for processing.
