Townsend man sentenced to prison for 2017 rape

TOWNSEND — Chief James Sartell and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office announced that a local man has been convicted of rape and sentenced to three to five years in prison.

John Zagwyn of Townsend was originally indicted on a rape charge in 2019, following allegations that he raped a woman known to him in 2017.

After a trial in Middlesex Superior Court, Zagwyn was found guilty on April 9.

Judge Robert L. Ullmann of the Middlesex Superior Court delivered Zagwyn’s sentence on April 19, mandating he serve time in state prison.

In a statement regarding the case, Chief Sartell expressed his gratitude towards the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office for their work.

“I want to thank the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office for their skilled and professional handling of this sensitive case,” he said. “I hope this conviction and sentence bring some measure of comfort and justice to the victim in this case.”
