NEWPORT — Jon Schurger, 22, of Saint Albans City, was arraigned in Washington County Superior Court on April 17, facing charges including manslaughter and contributing to the delinquency of a minor related to a fatal car crash on June 18, 2023, that killed 16-year-old Carson Smith of Berkshire.

The crash occurred early in the morning on Water Tower Road, where Carson Smith was the sole occupant of a Toyota Tundra that rolled over after he lost control of the vehicle.

Vermont State Police investigation revealed that the crash might have been influenced by alcohol and possibly other substances; Carson Smith was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the accident.

Investigations further showed that Jon Schurger allegedly provided the alcohol consumed at an underage party attended by Carson Smith and other minors.

Dylon Smith, 22, of Enosburgh, was also implicated in the case, accused of assisting Schurger.

The case was originally handled by the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s Office but was transferred to Washington County due to a conflict of interest. Schurger pleaded not guilty to all charges, and the legal proceedings are ongoing.
