Train strikes car in Enfield

ENFIELD — A car was struck by a train on Hammett Road Monday afternoon, resulting in minor injuries for the car’s driver and no injuries for the train’s occupants, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident, reported to the Penobscot Regional Communications Center at about 4:15 p.m., occurred when the car was hit by the train and pushed a short distance down the tracks.

The car sustained significant front-end damage, while the train suffered only minor damage to one side and was not derailed.

The train’s cargo was also reported to be unaffected.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.

Witnesses and the car’s driver have indicated that the train’s flashing red lights and signals failed to activate until after the collision.

The area around the crash site was temporarily blocked, but there was no danger posed to the nearby community.
