Lowell police warn of increased thefts targeting certain Kia, Hyundai models

1 min read

LOWELL — The Lowell Police Department has recently seen a significant increase in motor vehicle thefts where thieves are specifically targeting certain Kia models manufactured from 2011 to 2021 and certain Hyundai models manufactured from 2016 to 2021.

The department has been in contact with both auto manufacturers who informed them that they offer a free software update for qualifying Kias and Hyundais.

Owners of these vehicles manufactured during the listed time frames are advised to contact their local dealership to see if their model of car needs this software upgrade.

Vehicle owners can also contact Kia at (800) 333-4542 and Hyundai at (800) 633-5151 for more information on the software update.

In addition to this software upgrade, the Lowell Police Department strongly recommends Kia and Hyundai owners utilize security items, such as a steering wheel anti-theft device, which can serve as a visual deterrent to would-be thieves.
