ST. JOHNSBURY — The Vermont State Police are investigating the death of a Northeast Correctional Complex inmate who was admitted to the University of Vermont Medical Center.

Robert L. Brown, 52, of Johnson, was pronounced dead at 2:14 p.m. on March 5.

The Department of Corrections had notified state police the previous day that Brown was not expected to survive.

Brown had been transported by ambulance from the correctional facility to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury on the morning of Feb. 27 with various health issues.

He was admitted to the hospital before being transferred to UVMMC on Feb. 29 as his condition worsened.

An autopsy will be performed at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington to determine the cause and manner of death, which does not appear suspicious.

Brown had been in DOC custody since Nov. 8, 2023, on multiple charges.
