OAK BLUFFS — A local man was arrested for his second operating under the influence (OUI) charge in less than two months after police found him asleep at the wheel in a running vehicle late Sunday night.

Joao Batista Ferreira Soares Do Carmo, who was previously arrested following a vehicle crash on Jan. 20, was discovered by officers on March 3 at about 10:53 p.m. on Kennebec Avenue, near the police station.

According to the Oak Bluffs Police Department, Soares Do Carmo appeared to be sleeping in the driver’s seat of the parked vehicle.

Following a roadside investigation, officers suspected he was under the influence of alcohol and placed him under arrest.

Soares Do Carmo is now facing charges of OUI alcohol, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, and operating a motor vehicle after license suspension.

After being arraigned today in the Edgartown District Court, Soares Do Carmo’s bail was revoked on the first case, and he is currently being held at the Dukes County Jail.

The court has not yet disclosed the outcome of the arraignment for the new charges.
