North Country freshman Eoin Comes secures second place in state wrestling championships

NEWPORT — NCUHS freshman wrestler Eoin Comes clinched second place in the 113-pound category at the Vermont Wrestling State Championships, held at Otter Valley High School on Saturday.

Comes, demonstrating remarkable skill and determination, started his journey to the finals by overpowering his first opponent, Anthony Abetti from Burr and Burton Academy (BBA), with a decisive pin during the Quarter-Finals round.

His winning streak continued in the Semi-Finals where he faced off against the No. 2 seed, Noah Markwell from Springfield (SPR). Comes emerged victorious by decision, earning his spot in the Championship Round.

In the finals, Comes battled against the No. 1 seed Cahota LaFond from Colchester (COL). Despite a valiant effort, Comes was pinned by LaFond, resulting in a second-place finish. This impressive performance by the freshman wrestler at the state level has not only highlighted his potential but also secured him a spot to compete in the prestigious COED New England Championships, scheduled for March 1-2 in Providence, RI.

The runner-up finish marks a significant milestone in Comes’ nascent wrestling career and sets a promising tone for his future endeavors in the sport.
