Springfield police arrest man with loaded firearm during traffic stop

SPRINGFIELD — A routine traffic stop led to the arrest of a Connecticut man after Springfield police found a loaded firearm in his car on Jan. 16.

Derrick Gomez, 24, of East Hartford, was pulled over around 7:15 p.m. for driving with a damaged taillight on the 1100 block of Hall of Fame Avenue.

Upon further inspection, officers discovered the vehicle was uninsured and not registered.

As the car was being prepared for towing, a search revealed a fanny pack containing a loaded semi-automatic weapon.

Gomez was placed under arrest at the scene, which occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Gomez faces multiple charges, including carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, uninsured motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration, and a motor vehicle lights violation.
