Pickup truck rear-ends school bus in Dummerston, driver cited for DUI

DUMMERSTON — A Putney man was cited for driving under the influence after his pickup truck rear-ended a school bus on US Route 5 near Canoe Brook Rd on Jan. 8.

Douglas Pond, 62, was driving his 2002 Ford Ranger when he collided with a 2019 Freightliner school bus operated by Robert Powers, 69, of Newfane.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:12 p.m. under fair weather and dry road conditions.

Vermont State Police reported heavy front end damage to Pond’s pickup, while the school bus sustained minor rear end damage.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts and there were no injuries reported.

Following the incident, troopers conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Tests on Pond, noting several indicators of impairment.

Pond was arrested and taken to the Westminster Barracks for processing.

He was later released with a criminal citation to appear before the Vermont Superior Court, Windham Criminal Division on Jan. 30 at 8:30 a.m.
