Williston man charged in fatal I-89 crash

WILLISTON — A Williston man has been charged in connection with a fatal motor vehicle crash on I-89 that left one person dead last month.

Owen Benoit, 19, of St. Albans Town, was cited for negligent operation with death resulting after an investigation into the Nov. 22 incident that claimed the life of Josephine Buckley, 34, of Essex Town, police said.

Benoit was traveling over 80 mph in wet conditions when he lost control of his BMW 320i and struck Buckley’s Toyota Corolla as she was exiting the vehicle, according to authorities.

The crash occurred around 7:11 a.m. near mile marker 72.9 in Bolton.

Buckley, who was not wearing a seat belt, had slid off the road moments earlier and was attempting to leave her car when Benoit’s vehicle hit her.

She sustained fatal internal injuries.

He turned himself in at the St. Albans Barracks on Dec. 7 and will be arraigned at the Chittenden County Superior Court Criminal Division on Feb. 1 at 8:30 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing.
