Newport man arrested for burglary, assault

NEWPORT — The Newport Police Department has arrested 25-year-old Jarrame Rollerson of Newport on burglary charges.

The incident occurred yesterday at around 5:15 p.m. at 74 Bayview Street. Newport Police responded to a reported burglary in progress. Upon arrival, officers learned that Rollerson had entered the apartment without permission and assaulted a resident.

Rollerson allegedly sucker-punched the resident and continued to attack as the resident attempted to restrain him. This altercation caused damage throughout the apartment.

When police arrived, a resident was still restraining Rollerson, who was then promptly taken into custody. The residents of the apartment sustained injuries but declined hospital transport.

Prior to this incident, Rollerson had been charged with unlawful trespassing on four separate occasions.

Following his arrest, Rollerson was held on $5,000 bail. He is scheduled for arraignment today at the Orleans Criminal Court.
