SHIRLEY — A routine traffic stop escalated to an arrest for operating under the influence of alcohol after a Shirley Police Department officer witnessed a vehicle fail to heed a stop sign at the corner of Lancaster Road and Main Street at 6:04 p.m.

The officer observed the vehicle neglecting to stop completely at the intersection and then continue to have difficulty staying within the marked lanes.

After these observations, the officer conducted a motor vehicle stop to assess the driver’s ability to safely operate the vehicle.

Following a roadside assessment and based on the officer’s observations coupled with the traffic violations, it was determined that the operator was under the influence of intoxicating liquor.
