NEWPORT — The holiday spirit will be in full swing in Newport on December 2, with the annual Light up Newport event at Pomerleau Park, starting at 4 p.m. This festive celebration will feature the eagerly awaited lighting ceremony, where Santa Claus himself will be present to flip the switch, illuminating the park with holiday lights.

Families are encouraged to bring their cameras and wish lists for a memorable photo opportunity with Santa. The event will also include live music by Kyle Chadburn and complimentary hot cocoa, adding to the holiday cheer.

Following the lighting ceremony, the Derby-Newport Light up the Night Parade will commence. The parade is set to start at 84 Farrant Street, in Newport, with lineup beginning at 4 p.m. It will kick off at 5 p.m., winding through Downtown Newport and along Route 5 through Derby, concluding at the North Country Union Junior High School.

Participants in the parade are reminded that all vehicles must be street legal, and while ATVs are welcome, they cannot be used on roads before or after the parade.

Entrants are encouraged to creatively decorate their vehicles with lights, keeping in mind the 14ft height limit due to street lights and power lines. To maintain safety, there will be no throwing of candy during the parade.
