Hingham man killed in electric bicycle crash identified

HINGHAM –– The Hingham Police Department has released the name of the victim who died in a fatal crash involving an electric bicycle and a pickup truck on Rockland St. on Monday, Oct. 30.

Officers responded to the crash at 6:11 a.m. at the intersection of Rockland St. and Ringbolt Rd., where they found two people with severe injuries.

Both victims, who had been riding on the electric bicycle, were transported to South Shore Hospital. However, one did not survive.

The deceased cyclist was identified as 61-year-old Junming Mei of Hingham.

The second rider, whose identity has not been revealed, has since been released from the hospital. The pickup truck driver, who was not injured, remained at the scene of the accident.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the electric bicycle and the truck were traveling west on Rockland St. in the same direction when the crash occurred.

At the time of the incident, it was still dark and raining.

Rockland St. was closed at Hull St. and Canterbury St. until 11:00 a.m. while investigators from the Hingham Police, State Police Detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, and State Troopers from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section worked on the scene.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing.
