Newfane man charged with DUI, negligent operation after crash in Vernon

VERNON –– A 40-year-old Newfane man is facing charges of DUI and negligent operation of a motor vehicle following a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 142 in Vernon on Sept. 28.

Windham County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the crash and identified the driver as Alexander C. Freeman through his Vermont driver’s license. Deputies observed potential signs of impairment, prompting a DUI investigation.

The investigation concluded that Freeman was unfit to operate a motor vehicle.

Freeman was taken into custody and transported to the Windham County Sheriff’s Office. On scene, deputies requested a Drug Recognition Expert from the Wilmington Police Department to further examine Freeman.

After processing, Freeman was released to a sober adult and issued a criminal citation to appear at Windham Superior Court Criminal Division at a later date.

He also received a Vermont civil violation for operating a motor vehicle without liability insurance.

Assisting in the response and investigation were Officer Hammond of the Wilmington Police Department, the Vernon Fire Department, Rescue Inc, and Bulldog Towing.

The investigation was led by Deputy Thomas Raymond, Deputy Micah Fisher, and Detective Sgt. Mario Checchi from the Windham County Sheriff’s Office.
