Inmate dies at Springfield prison

SPRINGFIELD – Anthony Giallella, an 84-year-old inmate at Southern State Correctional Center, passed away in the prison’s infirmary unit today.

Giallella had been receiving comfort care in the infirmary after being treated at a medical facility.

During a routine check, a correctional officer noticed that Giallella’s breathing was labored.

The facility’s medical doctor was notified and responded immediately.

Unfortunately, Giallella was pronounced dead at 1:35 p.m.

As per VSP policy and state statute, Giallella’s body has been taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

The initial information provided and preliminary investigation determined that this was not a suspicious death.

This incident has been reported to the Vermont State Police BCI, who are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
