LEWISTOWN, PA — A Lewistown man faces assault charges after allegedly attacking a cohabitant while holding a knife on March 15.

Matthew W. Baumgardner, 38, of Lewistown, was charged with terroristic threats and two counts of simple assault following the incident in the 600 block of West Fifth Street.

Police initially responded to the residence at 2:52 p.m. for a report of a subject threatening self-harm.

Officers were called back after Baumgardner returned to the residence and allegedly assaulted the victim who was gathering items from inside.

Baumgardner reportedly struck the victim, knocking them to the ground, kicked them in the ribs, and continued striking the victim’s head while pushing it into the ground, according to police.

A third party and the victim told officers Baumgardner was holding a knife and threatening to kill the victim.

Officers located Baumgardner seated on a bed holding a knife.

Baumgardner complied with officers and relinquished the knife.

He made an utterance to officers that he “beat the s**t out of him,” police said.

Baumgardner was transported to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Officers obtained an arrest warrant for Baumgardner due to his domestic affiliation with the victim.

The warrant will be served once Baumgardner is medically cleared.
