BROWNINGTON, VT — A 45-year-old man was arrested after a two-day incident involving threats and a standoff with law enforcement.

Syman Belmore, 45, of Brownington, was taken into custody at approximately 6:45 p.m. on March 17 following a confrontation with Vermont State Police troopers.

The incident began at approximately 10 p.m. on March 16 when VSP Derby Troopers received a report that Belmore had threatened to kill an individual and made threats to destroy their residence and property.

Troopers responded to a residence in Lowell and attempted to speak with Belmore, but he barricaded himself inside the residence, threatened responding troopers and refused to comply with their commands.

Belmore continued making threats to kill the individual and another person into the morning of March 17.

He was later located at a residence in Brownington, where attempts to speak with him were unsuccessful.

At approximately 6:45 p.m., troopers responded to the residence to arrest him and discovered he had barricaded the driveway.

Verbal contact was established with Belmore, who was noncompliant to troopers’ commands and attempts to convince him to submit to arrest.

Belmore repeatedly threatened responding troopers, threw multiple objects toward them from the residence including a liquefied petroleum gas cylinder, and ultimately armed himself with and brandished a blunt metal object and advanced toward them.

Less-lethal munitions were deployed and after a brief struggle, Belmore was placed into custody.

Belmore was transported to the VSP Derby Barracks for processing, where he was ordered held without bail.

He was lodged at the Northern State Correctional Facility and is due in court at 12:30 p.m. on March 18.

Belmore faces charges of criminal threatening, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and habitual offender.
