One person found dead after house fire in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY — One person was found dead after a fire destroyed a home on West Hill Road in Montgomery early Sunday morning, authorities said.

The Montgomery Fire Department was dispatched at about 5 a.m. to a fire at 2757 West Hill Road and found the home fully engulfed and partially collapsed on arrival, according to Vermont State Police. Firefighters were told an elderly homeowner was unaccounted for.

The Department of Public Safety’s Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit responded to help determine the origin and cause of the fire and assist in locating any victims. During the investigation, the remains of one person were found inside the home.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of relatives. The victim was transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy.

Investigators said they were unable to determine a preliminary cause of the fire but do not consider it suspicious.
