VESTAL, NY — A man pleaded guilty to assault in the second degree before jury selection was set to begin in Broome County Court.
Gregory A. Rivenburg, 38, of Vestal, entered the plea before Judge Carol A. Cocchiola.
The conviction stems from an incident that occurred on Jan. 9, when officers from the Vestal Police Department responded to 3145 Stewart Road, Unit 110, for a report of an assault.
Upon arrival, officers were approached by a male victim who was covered in blood and missing a tooth.
The investigation revealed that Rivenburg, who was living with the victim at the time, entered the victim’s bedroom while carrying a large brisket knife.
Rivenburg then lunged toward the victim and attempted to stab him in the midsection, but tripped and lost control of the knife just before contact could be made.
After losing the knife, Rivenburg continued the attack by striking and choking the victim, ultimately knocking out one of the victim’s teeth.
The conviction will result in a six-year state prison sentence followed by five years of post-release supervision.
Correctional officers within the Broome County Correctional Facility discovered allegations that Rivenburg had allegedly attempted to intimidate a trial witness while the case was pending.
Senior Assistant District Attorney Alexander Czebiniak prosecuted the case with the assistance of District Attorney Investigator Thomas Brady.
Sentencing is scheduled for June 12, 2026, in Broome County Court before Judge Carol A. Cocchiola.
