WALDOBORO, ME — State fire marshal investigators responded to two unrelated structure fires in Waldoboro on Friday.
The Waldoboro Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 801 North Nobleboro Road at approximately 2:38 a.m.
Firefighters found a single-story home with fire extending through the front windows and roof.
Two occupants escaped the home, with one male resident sustaining burns to his shoulder and neck.
He was transported to Miles Hospital in Damariscotta.
The roof had collapsed in the center of the home and the front wall had burned away.
One firefighter fell through the floor but did not sustain any injuries.
The residents were using propane space heaters inside to help with warming.
Two cats and a dog perished in the fire, while one dog was rescued by the owner.
State Fire Marshal investigators classified the fire as undetermined due to competing accidental causes.
At approximately 7:03 a.m., the Waldoboro Fire Department received another call for a reported structure fire at 2231 Friendship Road.
Firefighters arrived to find a barn attached to a home heavily involved in fire.
Two occupants of the home had already escaped and were unhurt.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the barn with minimal damage to the home.
State Fire Marshal investigators determined the cause of the fire is electrical in nature and classified it as accidental.
