NEWTON, MA — The Newton Police Department is warning residents about an ongoing phone scam in which callers are impersonating department officers.

The scammers are identifying themselves as Newton Police Department lieutenants from a “Civil Division,” according to police.

The Newton Police Department does not have a Civil Division.

Police said scammers can “spoof” phone numbers to make calls appear as though they are coming from legitimate agencies, including the police department, and may pretend to be officers in an attempt to obtain personal information or money.

The department is advising residents who receive suspicious calls not to share personal or financial information.

Residents should ask for the caller’s name and identification number and verify the officer by calling Newton Police Department dispatch directly at 617-796-2123.

Residents may also visit the Newton Police Department in person for assistance.

The Newton Police Department will never demand payment or personal information over the phone, according to police.
