Fatal fire investigated in Dexter

DEXTER, ME — A man died in a house fire Friday evening on Grove Street, according to the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Dexter Fire Department responded to 62 Grove Street at approximately 5:29 p.m. Friday for a reported structure fire.

Firefighters arrived to find a two-story single-family residence heavily involved in fire.

One occupant had escaped the fire, but a second person remained inside the home and was unaccounted for, fire crews were told.

Firefighters located a deceased male victim on the second floor of the home while suppressing the fire.

The Dexter Fire Department requested assistance from the Office of the State Fire Marshal because of the fatality.

A team of Fire Marshal investigators responded to the scene and conducted an origin and cause investigation of the fire.

Fire investigators have made a preliminary determination that the fire originated in the kitchen and appears to be cooking-related.

The investigation remains ongoing as fire investigators continue to examine the scene and interview witnesses in the coming days.

The deceased was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where formal identification will be made.

The Dover-Foxcroft, Corinna, Newport, Sangerville and Garland fire departments assisted at the scene.
