HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — A 69-year-old man was charged with attempted murder after allegedly firing a handgun at police officers responding to a domestic violence call on Christmas night.
Township of Hamilton Police responded to the 500 block of North Street at approximately 9:16 p.m. Dec. 25 for a domestic violence incident.
The victim reported her husband, Stephen Pofi, 69, of Mays Landing, was in possession of a knife and a handgun and had fired the weapon prior to officers’ arrival.
No one was injured by the discharge of the firearm, and the victim was able to exit the residence unharmed.
Officers arrived on location, established a perimeter and attempted to make contact with Pofi.
He refused to obey instructions and again fired the handgun, this time in the direction of law enforcement personnel.
No officers were injured, and Pofi was ultimately taken into custody without further incident.
Pofi was charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, aggravated assault with a firearm, obstruction, harassment and resisting arrest.
He will be lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility following clearance from AtlantiCare.
