Man arrested at grocery store in Bath

BATH, NY — A man was arrested after refusing to leave a grocery store where he had been previously banned.

Officers with the Village of Bath Police were dispatched to Tops Friendly Market on West Morris Street at approximately 4:55 p.m. on Dec. 18 for a report of a male trespassing.

Upon arrival, store management advised that the suspect, James C. Crawford, 48, of Bath, was asked to leave multiple times and had refused.

Crawford continued to refuse to leave the property after officers spoke with him.

Bath Police advised Crawford that he was under arrest and he became combative with officers.

A brief struggle occurred before Crawford was placed under arrest.

Crawford attempted to kick a Bath Police officer in the knee during his arrest.

Crawford was evaluated by Bath Ambulance and bit an EMT in the hand.

The EMT was wearing gloves at the time and did not suffer any injuries.

Crawford was charged with two counts of attempted assault in the second degree, a Class E felony, resisting arrest, a Class A misdemeanor, and trespass, a violation.

Crawford was processed and transported to the Steuben County Jail to await CAP arraignment.
