TOWN OF UNION, NY — A man faces multiple felony charges after allegedly attempting to burglarize two properties and being stopped by a homeowner with a snow shovel.
Nicholas J. Sacco, 42, of Endicott, was arrested Sunday following a 911 call reporting a burglary in progress at a residence on North Street.
Broome County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene at approximately 5 p.m. and found Sacco lying on the ground in a fetal position while the homeowner stood nearby holding a snow shovel.
The homeowner told deputies he arrived home from work around 4:45 p.m. and heard glass breaking near his residence.
He then heard glass breaking again, this time from the back of his own house near his kitchen door.
The homeowner discovered Sacco attempting to break in and confronted him, pushing him off his enclosed porch.
Sacco reportedly attempted to come back through the porch, at which point the homeowner grabbed a snow shovel and struck Sacco multiple times.
The homeowner kept Sacco at the scene until deputies arrived.
The homeowner was treated at the scene by emergency medical services for lacerations to his arm.
Deputies also discovered that a hair salon next door had been burglarized.
Sacco was charged with second-degree burglary, a class C felony; third-degree burglary, a class D felony; and two counts of third-degree criminal mischief, class E felonies.
He was arraigned at Central Arraignment Part and remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility.
