CAIRO, NY — Two New York State Police troopers were injured and a driver was killed when a vehicle struck a patrol car during a traffic stop on Route 23 on Nov. 17.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:23 p.m. when troopers from the Catskill barracks had pulled over a Subaru for a Vehicle and Traffic Law violation.
While the troopers were conducting an interview outside the Subaru with their emergency lights activated, a 2020 Kia traveling westbound on Route 23 veered off the roadway onto the right shoulder for unknown reasons.
The Kia struck the rear of the patrol vehicle, pushing it forward into the Subaru.
One trooper was thrown down an embankment due to the impact, and another was pushed aside.
Both troopers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The troopers were treated and released from the hospitals.
The driver of the Kia, Sharon L. Torres, 69, of Cairo, was found unresponsive.
Life-saving measures were performed on scene by troopers, the Town of Cairo Ambulance and Greene County Paramedics.
Torres succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The incident remains under active investigation.
