HACKENSACK, NJ — The Hackensack Police Department announced the arrest of a city man on weapons and assault charges.
Jose E. Riofrio-Castillo, also known as Eduardo Castillo, 20, of Hackensack, was arrested on Friday after a 911 caller reported seeing a man walking with a gun in his hand near 116 Holt Street at 10:18 p.m.
The caller provided a detailed description of the man, and Detective James Han and Detective Gunther Lara-Nunez located him minutes later at the intersection of Main Street and Bridge Street.
Officers found a BB gun, a Beretta 92A1 6 MM BB, in his jacket pocket and arrested him.
He was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, a third-degree offense, on a complaint warrant.
Riofrio-Castillo was also arrested on an active warrant related to an incident that occurred Aug. 19 at Columbus Park in Hackensack.
He allegedly assaulted a man by punching him several times and putting him in a chokehold.
He then allegedly put a gun into the man’s back while telling him “bullets don’t lie.”
He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree offense, terroristic threats, a third-degree offense, and three counts of simple assault on a complaint warrant.
“I thank the resident who made the 9-1-1 phone call. We were able to take a dangerous, wanted person off the streets and keep the community safer,” Detective Captain Darrin DeWitt said.
Riofrio-Castillo was remanded to Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance at Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
