WELLSVILLE, NY — Two teenagers were killed and four others injured when an SUV struck a utility pole early Saturday morning.
State Police from the Amity barracks responded to the single-vehicle crash on Tarantine Boulevard at 2:24 a.m. on Nov. 8.
Investigators determined a 2020 Buick Encore was traveling eastbound on Tarantine Boulevard when it left the north shoulder of the roadway on a sharp curve and struck a utility pole on the driver’s side.
The SUV had six teenage occupants.
Derrick J. Smith, 17, of Canisteo, who was riding in the tailgate area of the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gavin Odell, 18, of Canisteo, who was sitting behind the operator, was also pronounced dead at the scene.
The 17-year-old driver, a 14-year-old front passenger, and two rear passengers ages 16 and 15 sustained minor injuries.
The four injured teens were transported to Jones Memorial Hospital.
Autopsies have been scheduled for both deceased victims.
Police said there were no signs of impairment.
The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigation are assisting with the investigation.
