Officer-involved shooting on Interstate 84 in Manchester

MANCHESTER, CT — A traffic stop early Saturday morning escalated into a shooting on Interstate 84 after a suspect fled from police and fired at officers.

A Manchester Police officer on routine patrol initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of 335 Center Street at approximately 1:42 a.m.

The operator initially stopped but then fled in the vehicle.

Officers deployed stop sticks as the vehicle approached the entrance to I-84 westbound from West Middle Turnpike, which successfully slowed the vehicle, but the suspect continued westbound on the highway.

While traveling on I-84, the suspect began shooting at pursuing officers.

A Manchester officer returned fire, striking the suspect’s vehicle and the suspect.

The vehicle then came to a stop on the highway, where officers immediately rendered medical aid.

The suspect was transported to a local trauma hospital for further treatment.

The Connecticut Office of the Inspector General has been notified and will assume responsibility for investigating the officer-involved shooting in accordance with state law.
