MANCHESTER, CT — Four establishments were found selling tobacco products or electronic cigarettes to individuals under 21 during unannounced compliance inspections on Oct. 21.
The Manchester Police Department, working with the State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program, conducted 15 unannounced inspections of retailers that sell tobacco products and electronic cigarettes.
The inspections were conducted to determine compliance with state laws prohibiting the sale of e-cigarettes and tobacco products to youth under 21.
Clerks at the four non-compliant establishments were issued first-time infractions in the amount of $300.
The following retailers were found to be non-compliant: Fuel+ at 220 Spruce St., Wasu Mart at 436 Center St., Jay and Jay’s Smoke Shop at 133 Spruce St., and Citgo at 116 Center St.
Eleven establishments were found to be compliant during the inspections.
Retailers are required by state law to inspect the photo identification of anyone who appears to be under 30 before selling a tobacco product or an electronic cigarette.
Non-compliant inspection results are referred to the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services for possible administrative action.
