BLAIRSTOWN TOWNSHIP, NJ — A feral cat that attacked an elderly couple tested positive for rabies.
Blairstown Township Police and the Blairstown Ambulance Corps responded to an address on Kishpaugh Road on Oct. 21 for a report of a cat attacking an elderly couple.
An officer treated the couple’s wounds and requested animal control.
Animal Control Officer Robbie responded and captured the cat.
The cat had signs of injury to its face from a wild animal and was sent to the State Health Department lab to be tested for rabies.
The test results were expedited due to human contact and visible signs of injury to the cat from a wild animal.
The cat tested positive for rabies.
The cat was a feral cat the couple had been feeding outside for the past several years.
ACO Robbie reminded residents to be mindful of feeding feral cats.
Residents should not leave cat food out overnight or unattended.
Raccoons tend to be carriers and mostly feed at night, and avoiding leaving food out will help prevent outside cats from coming in contact with them.
