DeWitt police arrest Syracuse man in hotel stabbing of woman, dog

DEWITT — Police arrested a Syracuse man in connection with a stabbing at a local hotel that left a 22-year-old woman and a dog wounded.

Officers responded to the Days Inn at 6609 Thompson Road at about 10:57 p.m. Aug. 20 for a report of a stabbing, according to the DeWitt Police Department.

Police found the woman in a hotel room with a stab wound to her chest and lacerations on her arms, going in and out of consciousness.

Officers also located a pit bull that had been stabbed in the chest.

The suspect had fled before police arrived.

DeWitt officers provided immediate trauma care to the victim while awaiting emergency medical services.

The woman was transported by ambulance to a local hospital and is listed in guarded condition.

Officers transported the dog to a local animal hospital for treatment, where it is expected to survive.

Police identified the suspect as Zhamir Wright, 29, of Syracuse, who was an acquaintance of the victim.

Less than an hour after the incident, an Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office sergeant located Wright walking on Court Street near Brookland Drive.

Evidence of the stabbing was found on Wright’s person.

Wright was transported to the DeWitt Police Department, where he was questioned and processed.

Wright was charged with first-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and aggravated animal cruelty.

He was transported to the Onondaga County Justice Center to await arraignment and is being held without bail.
