Barton man charged with third DUI after head-on crash

COVENTRY — Vermont State Police arrested a 32-year-old Barton man on his third DUI charge following a head-on collision on Vermont Route 14 on Aug. 15.

Gerald Davignon was traveling south on Vermont Route 14 at approximately 6:51 p.m. when his 2014 Dodge Ram crossed the center line and struck the left side of a northbound 2023 Lexus GX, according to police.

The Lexus was operated by Vipin Valayanad, 47, of Glastonbury, Connecticut, who was traveling to Jay Peak at approximately 50 mph.

Valayanad told police he was unable to avoid the crash due to a guardrail on the right shoulder.

Davignon reported not knowing what happened and said he was wearing his seatbelt and traveling the speed limit.

During the investigation, police determined Davignon was in violation of court-ordered conditions.

Davignon displayed signs of impairment and was arrested on suspicion of DUI-Drug, police said.

He was processed at the Derby Barracks and issued a citation for DUI third offense, violation of conditions of release and negligent operation.

Davignon was lodged at Northern State Correctional Facility on a violation of probation, and sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.

Valayanad was not injured.
