DANSVILLE — The Dansville Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate officers and demand money.

Police said scammers are calling village residents claiming to represent the department on behalf of marshals and requesting $1,000 or other amounts of money.

The department’s phone number is appearing on caller ID displays, but police said the calls are not legitimate.

“It is in fact not us, nor would we ever call anyone in regards to any agency asking you for money,” police said in a statement.

Officials advised residents not to provide personal information or money to the callers.

The department can be reached at 585-243-7100 or 335-3385 for questions about the scam or other matters.
