NEWPORT — Newport Police arrested a man Wednesday after he allegedly pointed a firearm at himself and another person during a domestic assault, then fled the scene.
Derick McIntosh, 38, of Newport, was charged with criminal threatening, aggravated domestic assault, aggravated assault with a weapon, reckless endangerment, attempted sexual assault, and armed while committing a felony.
According to Chief Travis Bingham, Newport Police received a report of an assault with a firearm at approximately noon on Wednesday, August 6, that occurred on Orchard Street.
Investigation determined McIntosh pointed a firearm at both himself and an individual known to him through a domestic relationship, then fled the scene in a motor vehicle.
Newport Police and law enforcement partners responded to McIntosh’s home on Scottsdale Road and established a perimeter. Officers, assisted by a family member, talked McIntosh into surrendering peacefully. He was taken into custody at his home.
The Orleans County Sheriff’s Department and the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles provided assistance at the scene.
McIntosh is being held without bail and will be arraigned Thursday in Orleans District Court.
