NEWPORT — Pedro Rivera-Garcia, 36, has been charged with assault on a correctional officer following an incident at the Northern State Correctional Facility on July 12.
Vermont State Police said Rivera-Garcia punched Correctional Officer Malcom Brown, 60, of Morgan, several times while Brown was on duty at 10:30 a.m.
Other correctional officers intervened to assist Brown during the assault, police said.
Brown sustained several bruises and a concussion in the incident.
Rivera-Garcia, who is housed at Northwest Correctional Facility in St. Albans, was cited to appear in Orleans Court on Sept. 9.
The charge is a felony because it is Rivera-Garcia’s second offense for assault on a correctional officer.
