NEWPORT — A local man was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly assaulted a woman and resisted arrest.

Police say on Saturday, a woman reported that she had been assaulted by Collins at an apartment complex on East Main Street.

According to the report, both Collins and the victim are known to each other.

When police arrived at the location of the incident, officers entered his apartment and were able to make contact with him.

Police say he was found holding a rifle across his chest.

Despite allegedly resisting their efforts, officers were able to take possession of the rifle and safely take him into custody.

No one was injured in the incident, police say.

Collins was previously convicted of resisting arrest in 2014 and is scheduled to be arraigned today in Orleans District Court after being held without bail over the weekend at the Northern State Correctional Facility.
