PITTSBURG, NH — The Pittsburg Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam involving callers impersonating DIRECTV representatives.
The scam begins when a person receives a phone call from someone claiming to be a DIRECTV representative, according to police.
The caller tells the customer their receiver box is no longer working or needs to be replaced.
The caller then offers to send a new receiver in exchange for a payment of around $400, although the amount may vary, while promising several months of free service if the customer provides credit card information over the phone.
In a recent case, a customer did not provide any personal or financial information and instead hung up and contacted DIRECTV using the company’s official customer service number.
The customer was informed the call was not legitimate and was a scam.
Police remind residents to never give out personal information over the phone, including credit or debit card numbers, Social Security numbers, banking information, passwords or account PINs, or other identifying personal information.
Anyone who receives an unexpected call requesting payment or personal information should hang up and contact the company directly using a phone number from a bill, account statement or the company’s official website.
