OWEGO, NY — The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate law enforcement officers.
Scammers are identifying themselves as sergeants from the sheriff’s office and telling victims they have been indicted by a grand jury and have a warrant for their arrest, according to authorities.
The callers then request payment to clear up the warrant.
The sheriff’s office said it will never request money from individuals over the phone.
Anyone who receives a call from someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer and demanding money should hang up immediately and report the details to the sheriff’s office at (607) 687-1010.
