4 arrested after vehicle thefts, chase in Lewiston

LEWISTON, ME — Police arrested four people after investigating three separate motor vehicle thefts overnight June 20 to June 21.

The thefts occurred in various parts of the city on Pine Street, Mitchell Street and North Temple Street.

At about 4:45 a.m., officers located one of the stolen vehicles being driven on Russell Street.

The vehicle failed to stop for the officer and a pursuit began.

The pursuit ended with the vehicle crashing on Sabattus Street and six occupants fleeing from the vehicle.

Four of the six were captured by Lewiston officers with assistance from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department.

One of the four arrested was Larando Sweeting, 18, of Lewiston, who was charged with violation of conditions of release, refusal to submit to arrest and theft by unauthorized taking with priors.

The other three were juveniles who were arrested and all charged with refusal to submit to arrest and theft by unauthorized taking, both misdemeanors.

They were all summonsed and released to their parents.

The two other stolen vehicles were later recovered after being found unoccupied.

The cases remain under investigation.
