SPRINGFIELD, MA — A man who failed to turn himself in to begin a prison sentence was arrested Thursday after attempting to flee from police on a city bus.

Robert Anderson, 42, of Springfield, was taken into custody around 1:25 p.m. on two outstanding warrants.

Officers received information around 12:45 p.m. that Anderson, who was recently sentenced to five to seven years in prison, had been seen boarding a bus in Springfield.

Anderson had been granted a stay before his sentence began but did not return to court to turn himself in.

Officers located the bus in the 200 block of State Street.

Anderson attempted to flee and ran out the back door of the bus onto Temple Street, where he tried unsuccessfully to scale a fence before officers arrested him.

Anderson is charged with resisting arrest.

He also faces an arrest warrant from Hampden Superior Court on charges of rape, kidnapping, trafficking of a person for sexual servitude, assault and battery on a family or household member, resisting arrest and threat to commit a crime.

Anderson also faces a default warrant from Hampshire Superior Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and disturbing a correctional institution.
