Teen crashes after falling asleep at wheel in Waterbury

WATERBURY, VT — A single-vehicle crash occurred on Waterbury Stowe Road near Laurel Lane on June 14, 2026.

Troopers from the Vermont State Police Berlin Barracks responded to the scene and found a black 2017 Ford Explorer with major front-end damage lying on its passenger side off the roadway.

The operator, Elijah German, 18, of Waterbury, was traveling north on Waterbury Stowe Road when he fell asleep while driving and had difficulty navigating a curve.

The vehicle left the right side of the roadway and came to rest on its side in a patch of trees above a steep embankment.

Investigation revealed the crash sequence through marks in the grass, the operator’s statements and witness statements.

German was evaluated and cleared by EMS at the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Weather conditions were clear and the road was dry at the time of the crash.
