WEST HAVEN, CT — Two men were rescued from Long Island Sound on May 7 after their boat capsized approximately 2,600 feet offshore.

A West Haven police officer was flagged down by a concerned citizen at approximately 9 p.m. at the April Street boat ramp parking lot.

The citizen reported that two friends had gone out on the water around 1 p.m. and were not answering their cell phones.

Additional officers and the West Haven Fire Department responded to the area.

A West Haven Police Department drone pilot deployed a department drone and began searching from above while fire department members entered the water in two rescue boats.

A resident in the area contacted police after hearing yelling coming from the water and reported seeing a flare.

The drone operator located two individuals in the water using thermal imaging technology and directed fire department rescue boats to their location.

The two men told first responders their boat had capsized after being struck by the wake of another passing boat.

Both individuals were evaluated on scene by the West Haven Fire Department before being transported to an area hospital for further evaluation.
