MEXICO, ME — Two 8-year-old girls who fled from school on foot remained missing Tuesday evening as multiple law enforcement agencies searched the Highland Terrace area.
The Mountain Valley Community School resource officer learned from school officials at approximately 2:30 p.m. that the two female students had left the school, according to Oxford County Sheriff Christopher Wainwright.
School officials reported both girls are in state custody and currently reside in Rumford.
The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the missing children at approximately 5 p.m. and immediately deployed resources to locate them.
The Maine Warden Service organized the search effort with assistance from the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Maine State Police and Mexico Fire Department.
Both girls were last seen in the backyard of a residence on Highland Terrace.
One girl was described as wearing a tie-dye black and white fleece sweat-suit with black and pink glasses.
She has brown eyes and brown hair with purple highlights, stands about 4 feet 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 67 pounds.
The second girl was described as wearing camo shoes and possible jeans with flowers while carrying a purple backpack.
She has brown and blond hair with hazel eyes, stands approximately 4 feet tall and weighs 70 pounds.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the juveniles is asked to contact the Oxford County Regional Communications Center.
